By now some of you have probably seen on tv or newspaper pictures of the disaster in New Orleans and Southern Mississippi. According to the CBS evening news, 80% of New Orleans is under water. I was wondering if there was anything as a group we could do to help out. I'm open to suggestions.

I have a phobia for needles, so I will probably donate money and/or supplies. I even have contemplated volunteering for the RedCross.

I can bring a big mallet and knock you out. I might not be able to give because might still be anemic. But I'll let them test me. Contacting the Red Cross is a good place to start to see what type of supplies they need.

That sounds good to me. Well, yeah the mallet and the volunteer/donating part...
John, you wanna contact the Red Cross to see what they need, as far as blood and various donations?

Yeh, I plan on calling them today, or just go by. They may take clothing, food(canned) and water. I just hope all of us could pitch-in in some way- money, blood, supplies and/or volunteer a little of our time.

I went by the Red Cross office on Cobbs this morning and donated $50 from me and $500 from my uncle. They accept $ and blood donations. Food and Clothing are to be donated at the church shelter at 7th and James(not sure where exactly that is).

HEB(Hewitt and Wooded Acres) will be having a food drive on Friday. The items most needed are bottled water, can tuna, peanut butter and diapers. They will be holding ther drive practically all day.

[/quote that's damn nice of you john,BUT how much of your money will actually get to the people in need.In the past the red cross has pocketed some of the money they have got for donations.I would think twice before donating money to them unless they will guarantee 100 percent of your donated money will go to the people in need.

I can understand your concern, Robert, but the Red Cross isn't one of the ones that will take the money and run. The Red Cross is probably one of the few institutions that are beyond reproach. Salvation Army, Goodwill, well, they're a little different.
I think Christy and I will go through our clothes and donate whatever we don't need. And I'm sure that we have some canned goods that can be donated.

Yeah I won't giving money to the Red Cross either. They still have 9/11 money that never made it to anyone.

Well, I heard some rumors of that, but I don't remeber anything coming of it......
At Lowe's we have the give a dollar at the register or make a donation of any amount, then Lowe's will match that as well. The last time we did it for disaster relief, we donated a total of 1.8 million dollars. We have already sent all of our generators to that area, and we are also asking employees to volunteer to go there to help with the relief.

Ok, everybody. Since some of us are uncomfortable with the Red Cross, you can also make money donations to the Salvation Army. Whatever makes you comfortable. The Red Cross is just one of the first organizations that popped into my head.
I think the Wooded Acres and Hewitt HEB are already taking food donations, but I'll double check. The items they need are: bottled water, peanut butter, tuna, granola or cereal bars and diapers. I guess they need stuff that is easy to fix and doesn't require cooking. Thanks guys.

I don't think the 9/11 money thing was so much a Red Cross problem as much as it was a governmental problem. I think Red Cross had problems finding out from the government who was supposed to receive funds, and then on top of that, you had people complaining because they either didn't receive money or felt they needed more.
I wouldn't give money to either the Salvation Army or Goodwill before the Red Cross, mostly because SA and GW are both privately owned. Red Cross is a government agency, so no one necessarily gains from donations. Plus, the Red Cross works closely with the military and its members, so I am a little partial. And I have a feeling that the military will be brought in before too long, based on the amount of looting I've seen on the TV.
But truly, if you don't feel comfortable donating money, buy groceries and clothes with the amount you'd planned to donate and then donate them. And, don't forget, there's not dollar value on a pint of blood - so donate blood.

This isn't the best place and time to got into the politics of charities.
In my mind you can't go wrong with blood, food, bottled water, clothing, personal items (tooth brushes, soap, etc...) and cleaning supplies.
MCC is sent out an email about a donation center. I'll check back with the details later.

I agree, the most important thing is that the people in need get help. If everybody donates at least something, it will add up.
