Is it me, or is the Jedi Council a group of stuck up, half witted, scruffy looking nerf herders? They themselves state that the Sith have been extinct for over a millenia, but yet believe that this child will bring balance to the force? Wouldn't balancing the Force bring about a more powerful Dark Side, since the Light Side has dominated for over 1000 years? Other than Light/Dark sides, what other balancing can there be?

I found a thread on the Council Forums (3SA) that discusses this. Basically they're saying that the imbalance is due to the sith. The Jedi keep the Force in balance, since they use it without personal gain. Sith only use the force for personal gain. Sidious is responsible for this imbalance of the force, and I think, possibly, responsible for the overconfidence of the younger Jedi. Feeds their ego, as we see him do in AotC. Maybe Palpy is looking for 'The One' but knows not who it is, and is 'courting' all young Jedi. Thereby tainting the pool, and getting what he needs from it.
