Mailing a letter to a galaxy far, far away? The U.S. Postal Service has the mailbox for you.
On March 16 the postal service unveiled about 400 R2-D2 mailboxes nationwide as part of a joint venture that will be announced today, said Theresa Meyers, Waco’s USPS customer relations coordinator.
The downtown Waco post office, 424 Clay Ave., is home to one of the mailboxes, and Meyers said it is drawing plenty of attention from Star Wars fans, young and old. A second box is stationed at Baylor University, Meyers said.
“I’ve seen people taking pictures with their kids, (and) it’s so cute,” she said.
Waco is among seven Texas cities with R2-D2 mailboxes, Meyers said. San Antonio, El Paso, Amarillo, Abilene and Fort Worth all have them, and Dallas has five, she said.
For now, the USPS is being coy about the joint venture. The recently unveiled mailboxes coincide with the 30th anniversary of the movie Star Wars. Meyers said she hasn’t heard about the issuance of Star Wars stamps or mailboxes featuring R2’s chum C-3PO, or any other “droids” for that matter. She also did not know what the new mailboxes cost to produce.
Meyers said the USPS is working closely with local police departments to prevent the theft of the mailboxes. She had a strong warning for Star Wars collectors who think the new mailboxes will make a nice addition to their collections.
“We’re reminding people that tampering with U.S. mail is a federal offense,” Meyers said.
