Sad news from the comic industry today with the announcement that artist Michael Turner died late Friday night from complications arising from his ongoing fight against cancer. Turner, who had worked for DC and Marvel Comics providing covers for books like Superman/Batman, Civil War and Uncanny X-Men as well as creating his own line of comics under his Aspen MLT label, had been diagnosed with chondrosarcoma in the year 2000 but had remained optimistic about his health throughout his extensive treatment. Aspen Comics have asked those wishing to make a charitable donation on Turner's name to donate to the American Cancer Society or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Turner was 37 years old.

This is the picture that started it all. I was with my first boyfriend at the local comic book shop. He was there looking at Magic cards and had just popped in to see if he was ready to leave. I had never paid much attention to anything there, but one day, I saw a poster on the wall. I stood in awe of the poster for a very long time. I thought it was so beautiful. Mike, the comic book guy, asked me if I knew what that was. I replied no. He said it was a poster advertising this new comic book written by some up and coming artist from Top Cow. I picked up Fathom, my first comic book, and fell head over heals in love. Michael Turner and I had a lot of firsts. First comic, first poster, first time I traveled to meet an artist, first autograph, first sketch, etc. It was also one day some few years later that I would meet Nick at the local comic book store in Waco that I would meet a group of great Star Wars/comic fanatics that I call my dear friends. Thanks for all of the memories, Michael.

I remember the time at Wizard World where he was just awesome with the fans...I always remember going up and getting the drawings he did on the board.

I remember that he announced a Fathom/Witchblade/Tomb Raider tour to certain comic book stores and traveling 45 min to Downtown Houston waiting in line for hours because his plane was delayed at Bush. I was the first in line and the signing was scheduled at like 10 AM and they didn't arrive until like 3 PM, but he stayed until every person got a signature. He even gave my Aspen poster a special tattoo for being first in line. He was diagnosed during that tour and as soon as he got through the surgery, the chemo, and the physical therapy, he finished that tour about 2 years later. It was an awesome thing to do. He kept his word.
