I bought this today. Apparently, it came out yesterday, according to the people on Live.
I played the MP on Live first, because hey, it's the only time you can get waxed and not get upset. Or say, hey, I just got it like 10 mins ago.
There are 4 different gametypes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, and Assault. Pretty obvious: Deathmatch - kill everyone. Team Deathmatch - kill everyone not on your team. CTF - duh. Assault - take your flag to their base. Then defend your base. Or vice versa.
I played deathmatch and team deathmatch. Pretty fun. Slim selection of weapons, but that's fine. I don't need to figure out a whole bunch of different weapons. What I didn't care for in Team Deathmatch is that if you have the computer select your team, you have no real way of knowing what side you're on unless you know which team starts with which weapon. Most of the time, the enemy is red, and your teammates are either green or blue. In TD, one team is red, one team is blue, and the only designation is the arrow pointing at their heads. If you're on red one time and blue the next, it could get confusing and if friendly fire's off, then you might cause your team to lose.
The MP maps are interesting, but nothing seems too familiar (haven't played all of them yet) except the one called Engine. The structures and fixtures have a Death Star ANH feel to them.
MP is fun, but it feels rather limited. Controls are adequate, but can be customized fairly well. My look speed was too slow (4 is the default), so I kicked it up to 7. I could hardly control the look then! Then I knocked it back down to 5 and it seems fine now, maybe a little sluggish, but not too bad. Halo and Halo2 have ruined me with the controls. Everything else has to measure to them, but RC does a decent job, and everything seems to be able to be customized, to an extent.
The Single Player campaign is the bright star of this game. You play RC-1138, or 38, and control a squad of 3 others. The campaign begins by taking you through the stages of cloning, starting with birth (or shortly thereafter). You get to see what it's like to be a clone, and it's pretty cool. We haven't even gotten to play and it has entertained me!
The first of the campaign starts with the Battle Of Geonosis. THe RC's set down behind the scenes and proceed to work their way inward, destroying as much as they can, including droids, Super Battle Droids (SBD), bugs and whatever else there may be. You get small upgrades as you go along. It's really neat to point and click a member to man a gun, get health, or have everyone target one enemy. The controls are thorough, but not overpowering.
I'd give this game either an 8.5 or 9 out of 10 with the short (2hrs) of game time I've had with it. The single player is exciting and looks to be at least 6 of that 9 points. The strength of the SP is what pulls this game through. The MP is fun, and it looks like as time goes by, it will become more and more intuitive. MP will probably take me a while to warm to. Right now it feels weird, like it's supposed to be Halo, but it's not. Most of the maps I've played don't give off a Star Wars vibe just yet, but that may change as I play more levels.
Overall, I would strongly suggest Star Wars fans pick this up. Gameplay is good, storyline for campaign looks strong, and the graphics look great. MP may need some time, but it has the potential. Something more squad based might be more fun, rather than Team Deathmatch. I haven't checked it completely, but if there were a multiplayer campaign, it might be a lot of fun. But then there'd be a lot more anarchy involved.
Couple of things I liked -- the members of the squad make little comments depending on what they're doing. Once, while 'slicing' a computer terminal, the guy says, "No terminal can beat my l337 4axx0r skills." That killed me. Another time, as we came around a bend to find battle droids and a couple of SBDs, the guy says, no kidding, "Look sir, DROIDS!" Oh did I find that a great comment. Small comments get sprinkled in there that we all know and love. I've heard "cut the chatter" a couple of times, along with other great Star Wars quotes. Putting them into this context really makes them seem different, mostly funny.
Good game, could be better, might be better. Will play and see.
