I've been watching A New Hope a lot lately (David still loves it) and have a few thoughts...
First, 3PO must have a memory wipe sometime before ANH whereas R2 doesn't. R2 knows a lot more than what we first give him credit. 3PO just blunders along, seeming to be knowledgable. R2 knew exactly where to go when he landed on Tattooine. Yes, Leia may have given him the info, but since R2 had spent a good deal of time on Tattooine before (albeit on Padmé's ship - he probably stored maps in his memory), it seems as though he 'remembered' being on Tattoine.
3PO has his moments in ANH, but I think it's more coincidence than knowledge. He shuts down when Ben tells Luke about his dad. He also appears to not know anything about the Lars home. And why didn't we see 3PO's first job programming binary load lifters? Must have been just after EpI.
