Michael Sheard Remembered August 31, 2005
Actor Michael Sheard, best remembered by Star Wars fans for his role as Admiral Ozzel, passed away today at his home on the Isle of Wight. He was 65. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Sheard studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. His lengthy filmography includes over 40 feature films and extensive television, appearances, including "Doctor Who," "Coronation Street," "Shackleton" and "Grange Hill."
In The Empire Strikes Back, Ozzel was the pompous Imperial officer that Darth Vader permanently removed from command with a telekinetic chokehold. Sheard also made a brief but unforgettable appearance in another Lucasfilm Ltd. production: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. There, he played Hitler -- a role he had performed many times on film. His other film credits include All Quiet on the Western Front, The Dirty Dozen: Second Assignment and Force Ten from Navarone.
In recent years, Sheard made regular appearances at conventions where he would meet with fans, including this year's Star Wars Celebration III. He had written three autobiographies on his career, Yes, Mr. Bronson -- Memoirs of a Bum Actor, Yes, Admiral -- Sci-Fi and Further Memories, and Yes, School's Out -- Sci Fi Conventions, Parties and Much, Much More!.
