LOL a little too scary for my tastes sometime. Like the nightly news.
Halloween 1 and 2 are good ones for this time of year.

Toby, you've changed! Lost Boys--definately. Also, being a child of the 80's, I have to say An American Werewolf in London has always been a favorite. Also love Evil Dead--Bruce Campbell--need I say more? And you can't go wrong with a classics like Psycho and Night of the Living Dead. The first Halloween is also a fave of mine. The Exorcist scared the beejeebers out of me the first time I saw it, but now it looks kinda cheesey (or soupy). So many to pick from.....

When I was a child, I would spend the night over at my friend's house fairly often. It was usually a Friday night, and I'd stay there until late Saturday evening. One Saturday afternoon, there was a movie on the independent station (what is now called Fox), and it was a scary movie. In this movie, there was a necklace (I think) that had magical powers and fell onto this little pygmy statue, bringing it to life. The statue then proceeded to cut the power and phone lines, then drill his way into the bedroom where the lady of the house locked herself in. And he killed her.
Since then, I have really not been able to watch any scary movies, or have much interest in them. My parents were never into scary movies either, so growing up I never really got to see these classic cult horror movies that everyone else knows and loves.
When I was 14 or 15, Nightmare on Elm St 3 came out, and my brother and I watched it, and then watched the first two. I think the first one was the scariest; I don't remember the second one much.
Christy likes horror movies about as much as she likes spicy food, so we don't see them very often. But I have been trying to check out the classics from time to time. I think The Ring was the last 'scary' movie I saw, but only because my bro let me borrow it.
OOOh, I forgot, I did see Rosemary's Baby when I was in college (the first time) - but that didn't seem very scary at all.
I suppose now that Halloween is creeping up, I may be able to catch some of the classics on cable - like the first Halloween and Friday the 13th. But I usually think the scariest movies are the ones that aren't very far from the truth - gory slashers aren't that scary to me. I have heard that the Amityville Remake is pretty scary....

The Amityville remake wasn't that scary, just more graphic and gory than the 1979 original. I still don't know why people liked the Ring so much. It didn't really scare me at all. I found it a little dull.
I think scary movies scared us more as kids because we had more of an active imagination. As we've gotten older and had more experiences of life, we can better discern what is real and what isn't.

True. I think it's called getting cynical. I think the ring wasn't as scary as it was creepy. When that chick crawled out of the TV, I was pretty creeped out. But I don't think I was all that scared.

Movies that actively left a "scary" imprint on me weren't movies I thought were even scary when they scared me. Like after the Fly II I would check the vent. ducts every time I walked into a bathroom or the Dark Crystal at the beginning when the old one died and desintegrated; to this day I've only seen it once. For the most part I always found a calming connection to horror movies it was usually simple: the killer was a badass and you was going to die. The two movies that truly ever got to me were "IT" the 1st 1/2. Especially when he came alive in the photo! The other was SLC Punk. That movie put a mirror to myself and showed me the truth. I quit wearing the anarchy symbol after that movie.

When I was 12, my mom let me choose what I wanted to watch on my birthday, so I stayed up and watched House of Wax or Wax Museum, something like that. I saw it a year or two ago, and it was really cheesy, but when I was a young teenager, it was incredibly creepy and I had nightmares for several weeks!
