Watched this twice today. The final duel now has a different meaning to me.
With EpI we find that there are only two sith, a master and an apprentice. So when Palpy tells Vader that Skywalker should become a Sith, that pretty much tells Vader to hit the bricks. So, in ESB, when Vader tells Luke they could rule the galaxy, he's saying, I'll be the master and you the apprentice, and they'd overthrow Palpy. Of course that doesn't happen.
So in ROTJ, Vader is reluctant to try to turn Skywalker to the dark side, not because of redemption, but because he knows he'll die.
I think in EpIII we'll see Palpy fry Dooku while Anakin watches, similar to the Luke, Palpy, Vader scene. But this time, he's sick of Palpy and his damned hot fingers and tosses him off the edge, never more to return. (Non-EU)
I think he'll fry Dooku because of the Master/Apprentice deal. Sidious (Palpy) is done with Dooku, and Vader's there, so PooF new apprentice.

You're missing one thing. Dooku is not the Apprentice. In the latest issue of Republic(#63), Dooku tells Quinlan Vos that he is not a Sith. So who was the apprentice??? Hmm...

No no no, John. You're forgetting Yoda's words, so therefore, whatever he says is not to be trusted, especially when concerning sith or jedi.
Anakin didn't really know of Maul, but he probably found out from Obi-Wan about the master/apprentice of the sith, then Dooku, then himself... then Luke?

So maybe he's trying to hide the fact that he's Sidious's apprentice?

I have some memories of this movie from 1983, and I think they're wrong.
One thing I remember was that Luke jumped up and grabbed the grating after falling into the pit. Then all the beings stomped his fingers and he fell back down. Maybe I'm just misconstruing the fact that he fell down with the image of him grabbing the gate prior to killing the rancor.
I don't remember the others now, so I'll have to watch it again to remember them.
